In one of the gravest forest fires in recorded history, approximately 1.5 million acres of forestland in Chile were burned down. It was really devastating to look at. Many were affected including trees and wildlife, as well as homes and people in the area.
To help out, a group of dogs was hired shortly thereafter. This group had a unique mission – they were to help reseed the forests with natural plants that would help make the area habitable again for the wildlife.
Das, a 6-year-old border collie, and her 2-year-old children named Summer and Olivia were equipped with backpacks that were filled with seeds. On their special mission, they were instructed to run and wander across the charred forests. By doing so, they are actually helping spread the seeds all throughout the land and we all could hope for the best that the seeds grow.
The owner of these two amazing dogs is very proud of her pets. She even stated that she has seen her dogs really loving what they were doing. They get to run as fast as they want to in an open area and explore with no one to tell them to stop or not to do something.
On an average day, the dogs go approximately 18 miles and distribute 20 pounds of seeds across the ravaged area. The dogs were trained to return for regular refills of their backpacks and were rewarded with loads of affection and treats each time they come back. It is a win-win situation since the dogs get to enjoy running around and the area gets the seeds that would help bring it back to life.
Aside from helping with reseeding the forests, these border collies are active in disc dog competitions, sheep herding, and obedience training. What a well-rounded trio of dogs!
